The Affordable Home Battery Program — Starting 1 July 2025
A new nationwide initiative is rolling out to make energy storage more accessible for households and small businesses across Australia. From July 2025, eligible participants can unlock upfront rebates of up to $4,000 toward approved battery systems, helping cut electricity costs and maximize the value of solar power.

Who’s Eligible?
The Affordable Home Battery Program is open to Australian households and small businesses, including charities and not-for-profit organisations, as long as certain requirements are met:
- You own or operate a property or small business in Australia.
- The battery system has a usable capacity between 5kWh and 50kWh.
- The battery is VPP-capable (compatible with a Virtual Power Plant).
- Installation is carried out by a Clean Energy Council (CEC)-accredited installer using approved products.
- The system is installed on or after 1 July 2025.
- You haven’t already received a rebate under this program for the same property or location.
Both owners and renters may qualify, depending on system ownership and landlord consent. Landlords cannot apply on behalf of tenants without proper agreements.
Important: Only systems installed from 1 July 2025 onward are eligible. Any installations before this date cannot receive the rebate.
What’s Included in the Rebate?
Through the Affordable Home Battery Program, eligible Australian households and small businesses can receive a rebate of up to 50% of an approved battery system’s cost, with a maximum rebate of $4,000. The program is designed to make battery storage more accessible by lowering the upfront investment needed to store excess solar energy for use during evenings or outages.
The rebate is calculated on the net system cost, including GST and factoring in contributions from Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) or Virtual Power Plant (VPP) participation. The rebate applied will always be the lower of 50% of the net cost or $4,000.
Example Scenarios:
- A $12,000 system (after GST/STCs) would receive $4,000, not $6,000.
- A $6,000 system would receive $3,000 (50% of the cost).
- A $7,800 system would receive $3,900, staying under the $4,000 cap.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Usable storage capacity between 5kWh and 50kWh
- Installed by a Clean Energy Council (CEC)-accredited installer
- Use of approved battery products
- VPP-capable, enabling future participation in grid services
The program is open nationwide to all households and small businesses, with no income testing required, but each property or location can only claim one rebate.

All non-government entities are eligible to apply, including businesses operating as a company, trust, partnership, or not-for-profit organisation.
Solar Victoria recognises three categories of eligible business owners:
- Owner-occupier – You own the property in the same name as your business.
- Associated entity – You own or control the property under a different name from your business.
- Renter – You lease the property from an unrelated entity.
A fully qualified electrician or accredited installer will come to your property to set up your heating and cooling system. All installers carry official company ID, so you can be confident you’re dealing with a verified SolgoGroup professional.
